Mr Mike Millard

COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

Mr听Mike Millard

I am very pleased to be able听to share with you that a 榴莲视频下载 One College One Campus will be delivered to the 榴莲视频下载 community from the commencement of 2019 school year.

This听comes after very extensive feasibility work and detailed consideration by the Board and College Leadership. Together, as One College on One Campus, we will create new beginnings and exciting possibilities for students from Reception to Year 12.

In order to meet the January 2019 deadline, the design process now needs to happen as a priority. We will be ensuring students and teachers are an essential part of the design teams. We will have two teams. One focusing on delivering the Junior School design and the second delivering the STEM enabled Middle School classrooms. From each of these collaborative teams, we are seeking feedback, creative ideas, and design solutions.

The next 18 months will be 鈥榖usiness as usual鈥 for all classes from Reception to Year 12.

We are听fortunate听to be able to fence off the building zones and the build will have little impact on learning on the normal functions of the Middle and Senior School Campus.

There will be no impact from the building program on the functions of the Junior School.

Throughout this significant change process, we are committed to providing regular communication and updates to students, parents and staff, not only about the progress of the building program but also about the culture of 鈥樍窳悠迪略 as One College鈥 we seek to enhance.

This is a very exciting phase in the life of 榴莲视频下载 and together we look forward to creating a wonderful seamless R-12 learning environment for our students.

Mrs Gillian Edwards

HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOL

Mrs Gillian Edwards

A warm welcome to Term 3.

It was such a pleasure to return to see yet another Senior School classroom had been updated over the term break. Like several other classrooms previously, BG3, the Chinese room, has been completely renovated and provides a wonderfully light and fresh learning environment for the students. Thank you to our maintenance staff for their efforts. We look forward to their continued good work as they move on to update rooms BG4 and BG5.

In my greeting to Senior School students, I did liken this term to the third quarter of a football game; one often referred to as the premiership quarter. For it is during this term the real hard work must be put in, in order to achieve success. This could not be more true for our Year 12 students, as many of their long-term assignments will be due towards the end of this term; and as they prepare for their final examinations. It was very pleasing to recently receive 榴莲视频下载鈥檚 results for the Research Project, with every student yet again achieving a successful pass in this compulsory SACE subject.

I had the pleasure of attending the Year 12 Drama moderated performance of Turn of the Screw. It was a very atmospheric piece that, for the audience, provided as many questions as it did answers. Well done to all concerned for a most accomplished presentation.

At our Senior School Academic Assembly we recognised the academic efforts of students in Semester 1.

But we also acknowledge the efforts of those who have consistently worked hard during Semester 1 and encourage all students to strive to do their best for the remainder of the year.

The following quote from Aristotle was highlighted at our assembly, and it serves as a timely reminder to us all:

鈥淓xcellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives – choice, not chance, determines your destiny.鈥

We congratulate the following students on their achievement of an Academic Excellence Award:

PE Top

COLLEGE COMMUNITY听TOPS

Following the recent introduction of the new College PE top, we are pleased to announce that Community Tops are now available.听These tops are in the same style as the PE top; however, in the Community colours.听We know how proud students are of their Community, and how delighted they will be to wear their 鈥榗olour鈥 for Community events.

In 2018, it will be compulsory for each student to have a Community Top; however, it will be optional for the remainder of 2017.听With Foundation Day coming up on Thursday 28 September, we hope to see as many students as possible wearing their Community tops.

There will be a number of opportunities throughout the year at each campus, where students will be required to wear the Community Top; including but not limited, to Athletics and Swimming Carnivals.

YEAR 2 ACTIVITIES

As part of the PYP, the Year 2 classes have been exploring the Transdisciplinary theme of 鈥楬ow We Organise Ourselves.鈥 Our inquiry into economic activities and their impact upon humankind and the environment has led us to consider the impact of money, the fact that how we treat our community defines us and how a community鈥檚 strengths and achievements affect its success.

The decision was made to take action within our own community, by sharing our resources in order to help others. After much discussion, a food drive was decided upon and the Year 2 classes challenged each class within the Junior School to donate 48 non-perishable food items within 48 hours.

In order to improve the chance of being successful, Year 2 students used their creativity and information technology knowhow to create posters, which were distributed to all classes. The response was overwhelming!

The Year 2 students would like to thank the 榴莲视频下载 Junior School community for their consideration of others who are less fortunate; for showing that we treat our community with respect, kindness and a generous spirit and for helping us to achieve success with our food drive.

St Mark鈥檚 Anglican Church Soup Kitchen in Wynn Vale was the grateful recipient of the food items. We thank them for their warm response to the action which we have taken and trust their community outreach will prosper as a result.

Snow Trip 1

SNOW TRIP – 2017

Sunday, 16 July – Friday, 21 July

On 16 to 21 July, during the holiday break, 26 students accompanied by 4 teachers travelled to Mount Hotham for the annual听Snow trip where students had exclusive access to Asterix lodge and stayed in in-snow听accommodation.

Each morning students woke up to fresh snow, with daily lessons helping develop their skills. On the Wednesday night, the group skied under lights on ‘The Big D’.

The next morning, students participated in a College race to the base of the mountain, with many spills and stories of close calls before students refined their skills in snowball making as they headed out to try听tobogganing听in the afternoon.

The last day was beautiful and clear, so some students headed out for a quick snowboard before they prepared for their journey听home.听榴莲视频下载 left with new skills, friendships and a fondness for听snow-sports.

Year 6 Reading winners 2

YEAR 6 – JUMP INTO BOOKS IN JUNE

The Year 6 cohort was challenged to 鈥榡ump into books in June鈥 by spending 15 minutes per day reading with their families. We hope those who took up the challenge found it a rewarding experience. The benefits of reading on children鈥檚 learning are well documented, and include:

  • Mental stimulation:听Reading activates parts of the brain which few other activities do. Puzzles (like crosswords and Suduko) also give this benefit
  • Stress reduction:听Most people find reading is good in helping to unwind after a busy day
  • Reading: Increases your knowledge base
  • Vocabulary expansion:听A great way to meet new words
  • Improved spelling:听Generally, kids who read more, spell better
  • Stronger analytical thinking skills: Especially when reading mysteries or 鈥渨hodunits鈥
  • Improved focus and concentration
  • Better writing skills.

Out of the students who returned their completed Challenge sheets, 2 were chosen at random to win a $25 book voucher from QBD. The winners were Benjamin Carter and Maya McInnes. Happy reading Benjamin and Maya!

Year 9 Camp

YEAR 9 –听CAMP

Tuesday, 1 August – Friday, 4 August

As students returned from their holidays all refreshed and eager to continue their learning for the second half of 2017, the Year 9 cohort was making their听final preparations before beginning the听journey to the Southern Finders Ranges.

2017 marks the return to the Mount Remarkable National Park region and the township of Melrose for 榴莲视频下载 students. The Year 9 cohort journeyed to the region to gain a different perspective of our local natural environment through participation in an overnight bush听walk through the middle of the Mount Remarkable National Park from Alligator Gorge to Mambray Creek campsite.

榴莲视频下载 raced听up the nationally acclaimed mountain bike trails outside of the Melrose township, along with a more relaxing nature walk through the creek networks around the edge of the National Park. The camp was a chance to look at each individual students community project in a different way through a different environment.

It was an interesting four days for students and presented them with a opportunity to engage with their peers in an more relaxed, outside environment, removed from the fast pace听of the school yard.

Year 12 Drama 10

YEAR听12 – DRAMA PRODUCTION

Tuesday, 25 July听–听Wednesday, 26 July

鈥淭urn of the Screw鈥

Our Year 12 Drama production was filled with psychological intrigue as the students embodied the Gothic Victorian era in James L. Seay鈥檚 adaption of Henry James鈥 classic 鈥淭urn of the Screw鈥 which was written in 1890.

Our aim was to present a performance piece which would challenge our audiences鈥 perceptions of what is real and what is imagined. The play sees Ann, a young tutor, employed at an isolated manor to care for two young charges. Mystery haunts the halls of Bly House as Ann struggles to understand its past.

It has been an absolute privilege to work with the Year 12 Drama students this year. While they have worked tirelessly to present a well-received and polished performance, we have had a wonderful time full of fun and laughs.

Drama provides students an opportunity to work in a collaborative and creative environment, where they can express ideas and contribute to workable solutions through effective communication. The Year 12 Drama course offers students a memorable 榴莲视频下载 experience and one that I fondly shared with an old scholar recently where we reminisced the creative process of some 10 years ago.

As their teacher, I am proud of the commitment of our group and it is certainly an experience I will treasure as the students brought to life my long-held vision for 鈥淭urn of the Screw鈥.

Mrs Raelene Lyon – Drama Teacher
