One College New Classrooms

On Friday 15 February, it was wonderful to walk across to the five new classrooms with the Reception and Year 1 students for orientation to their new classrooms. The students were very happy to see the new classrooms, breakout and wet areas and outside decks that will be their new home.

I want to thank the students and teachers for the great focus on learning they have shown over the 3 weeks during the finalisation of these Junior School learning areas.

The Junior School classrooms are a wonderful example of creative design strongly influenced by contemporary approaches to learning. Breakout zones become a vital part of the learning spaces that allow students to work ¡®in¡¯ or ¡®nearby¡¯ the classroom. The design brief of height, light and visible structure has been explored by the architectural team to create these learning spaces. These design principles are further developed in the new Middle School.

The playgrounds are well underway. The Reception to Year 2 playground area is quite large and we will be given access to ¡°progressively¡± completed sections. The first three of fourteen elements and the Year 3 to Year 5 ¡®stick¡¯ playground will be available for use next week based on architectural signoff.

The 4 elements are rope bridge, cubby bridge and monkey bars set in a nature play space. As each part is completed we will progressively open up more elements.

Community Spirit to the Fore ?
Hillcott Community is heartily congratulated on their very closely fought win at the recent Middle and Senior Swimming Carnival that took place at the Adelaide Aquatics Centre on Thursday 14 February. We must look back to 2012 for the last time Hillcott was the winning community at this event. Their win reflected the community focus and teamwork so evident across all five communities on the day. Second-placed Surrey Community was only 10 points behind on 643 points for the day.

This is such an enjoyable day for the students, the family supporters and staff. There is great spirit and a real sense of having fun and being involved. My thanks to everyone involved including the Director of Sport, Mr Joshua Willis and Sports Assistant Mrs Karen Jarmen who plan and organise this special event. DEPUTY PRINCIPAL/HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOL

In Week 2 we celebrated the achievements of our 2018 Year 12 students as the Academic Celebration assembly. We were so pleased that 21 of the 23 students who achieved an ATAR of 90 or above were able to join us and rightly be congratulated by our current school community. The staff spoke glowingly of the 2018 cohort as hard-working, focused individuals who really grew together and relied on each other through their senior years at the College. The word they used the most to describe them was genuine: they truly cared about each other¡¯s success and their classmates’ wellbeing. Congratulations to the 2018 Dux of the College, Elijah Schutz, who achieved a perfect ATAR of 99.95, an outstanding achievement. I talked to our students about there being no magic formula to achieving your best possible result in Year 12, it is through hard work and an internal desire to give everything your best effort. We look forward to hearing about the ongoing adventures of our 2018 Year 12 students.

ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ were also presented with Merit certificates for those that achieved the highest possible result in a subject. We had 26 merits awarded to our students with 2 students received 3 merits, 2 students receive 4 merits and 1 student receive 5 merits. Congratulations also to current Year 12 student Harry Rischmiller who was awarded a merit in a Stage 2 subject he completed in 2018. Harry was awarded a merit for CAD – Systems and Control Products.

This week we had we had the South Australian Police Force come and speak to our Year 10 and 9 students about being responsible online citizens. The laws and penalties for students under the age of 18 were clearly explained to us all. At times, unfortunately, today, students are surrounded by technology and social media and it is a difficult world to navigate for their young adult brains. As parents, we can also struggle to provide support or understand just what is occurring in the online world our students are living in. Some of the best advice was for parents to talk to children about the online environment that they are experiencing and to agree on rules around time limits and location of devices throughout your house. ?HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL

Thank you to all of the parents and staff who attended our Middle School Information Night on Tuesday 19 February. It was fantastic to see so many in attendance to learn more about the diverse opportunities available to our students in 2019.

On the night, I spoke about the significant changes ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ is undergoing this year. We are creating innovative, flexible, 21st-century teaching and learning spaces. Over the past couple of weeks, I have seen that our students are ready and eager to embrace these changes! Middle School is where we encourage our students to explore ideas and issues deeply, to think critically about their learning, to act with integrity and take responsibility for their own actions and consequences that accompany them, to be open-minded, caring and courageous. It is our vision the new infrastructure will grant unprecedented access for ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ students in sophisticated STEM facilitates, aquaponics, robotics, maker spaces, integrated disciplinary approaches and enhanced collaboration amongst staff and students.

However, we are more than just teaching and learning. The strength and warmth of the ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ community make?this a safe, inclusive environment to learn and work with a strong focus on relationships. I have been overwhelmed by the level of commitment from our staff in building these critical connections with our students. The Swimming Carnival last week was a fantastic example of staff and students demonstrating camaraderie, support, and community spirit. It was wonderful to see so many students participating and congratulations to Hillcott for their success on the day!

HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

What a start to the year with new school buildings and new surroundings. I would like to commend the teaching and support staff for their extra efforts in making the best of the situation. Likewise to our parents and children, thank you for your patience and understanding. After a few teething problems, we have been working hard to ensure children are safe, happy and learning, and that it is ¡®business as usual¡¯. Should you have any concerns, I encourage you to contact Junior School staff, including myself and Mrs Paula Hanna, so that together we can find a solution.

In Week 5, we are moving into a very busy and exciting week with Swimming Lessons and our Swimming Carnival on Thursday 28 February.

This is a wonderful day in the Junior School calendar, one I look forward to each year as we see our whole community working together to ensure a successful day for our children with parents and grandparents, teaching and support staff working together side by side.

As I have mentioned previously, the Swimming Carnival is a significant and unique event at ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ, with staff getting involved and many joining the students in the pool. It is a pleasure to see our teachers going that extra mile in support of our children, something I have not seen at my previous schools and one that is truly special to ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent/Teacher Interviews will be held in Week 7, from Tuesday 12 to Thursday 14 March. These are an invaluable experience for the teachers, and we hope for you as parents. There is a huge body of research that points to the correlation between parent involvement in a child¡¯s schooling and their educational success. We do encourage active participation in your child¡¯s learning, and for parents to attend as many school functions as possible. Celebrate the successes, and together, with your child and teacher, work alongside each other to further develop any challenges.

Learning Journeys

Learning Journeys will commence in Week 8 this term ¨C Wednesday 20 March and are a wonderful opportunity for students to celebrate their learning with parents and family.

All year levels will open their classroom and invite parents/caregivers to share in the learning. It involves classes showcasing completed work to their special guest. Each child will have the opportunity to share and reflect upon their different learning experiences, work, learning environments and classroom experiences.

Learning Journeys are valuable to the students, giving them the experience and enabling them to develop many different skills, including; responsibility, reflection, choice and control of their learning through self-evaluation

Year 5 parents please note, immediately after Learning Journeys, Emily from Wilderness Escape will be offering a parent presentation from 6:30pm to 7:10pm.

ATTENDANCES

ATTENDANCE / ABSENCES / LATENESS / EARLY PICK-UP

All children aged between 6 and 17 years of age must be enrolled and attend school regularly.? Under the Education Act of South Australia, Parents and/or Caregivers are held responsible for the regular attendance of all children in their care.

At ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ Christian College, regular student attendance is a high priority.? To maintain a standard of excellence it is important that students attend school regularly, and arrive at school on time to ensure that absence has no adverse effect on their learning and well-being.

The College sends an SMS to parents of any students who are not at school by 9:00am where we have not received any notification from parents.? We will follow up with parents any absence that remains unexplained.

We understand that there will be times when students are unable to attend school for reasons including illness, injury and unforeseen personal circumstances. On these occasions:

• parent notification must be made to the College before 9:00 am by phone or email to absentees@pedarecc.sa.edu.au
• an absence due to illness for 3 or more days will require a medical certificate.

In the event of a family holiday during term time, parents must complete and submit an ¡®Application for Exemption from School Attendance¡¯ at least 4 weeks prior.

If possible, dental and medical appointments should be made outside of school hours.

P&F ASSOCIATION – AGM

The Parents and Friends Association (P&F) is a voluntary organisation run by an energetic committee. College parents, grandparents and friends across all year levels are welcome to join the P&F. The aim of the association is to organise activities throughout the year to bring the ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ Community together to both friend raise and fundraise for the benefit of our students.

We warmly welcome members of the College Community to participate in the activities arranged by the P&F, either as a member of the Committee, an event volunteer or to volunteer in the P & F Shop.

The Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday 18 March, at 7:30 pm in the Wattle Centre at the College.?New members are invited and welcome to attend.

YEAR 2 – TANK ART

Year 2 students have benefited from the passion and expertise of our resident artist, Mrs Karan Hudson. After listening to the story ¡®Picasso and the Girl with a Ponytail¡¯, the students were inspired to walk in Picasso¡¯s footsteps and create their own masterpieces. Under the guidance of Mrs Kai Benyk, with her tried and tested glue paste, a temporary art display has now been established on the water tank for everyone¡¯s enjoyment.

M&SS SWIMMING CARNIVAL

On Thursday 14 February, students from the Middle & Senior School participated in the annual ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ Swimming Carnival at The Adelaide Aquatics Centre.

It was a wonderful occasion full of colour, energy and exciting competition. There were impressive individual and team performances across the carnival as well as a great spirit between the five communities.

The level of participation in the pool was outstanding as the students embraced the opportunity to represent their communities for the first time in 2019. Each community eagerly participated in championship races and novelty events and cheered loudly from the stands.

There were some fantastic team and individual performances throughout the day. Irina Tarchynska, Year 9, had another impressive carnival, breaking two records on her way to a gold medal in the 50m female fast five freestyle. Zack Piercey, Year 7, continued his fantastic swimming, also breaking two records.

ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ who had particularly strong individual performances will be formally recognised in next week¡¯s assembly.

Congratulations to the Hillcott Community, who broke their long drought to take home the Swimming Championship Shield. Congratulations also to Brooklyn for a big improvement and taking home the All-Age Community Relay Cup.

Thank you to all staff, students and parents for your support of the Swimming Carnival that highlights the wonderful community we have at ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ. Good luck to both our SAPSASA and SSSSA Swim teams as they compete in inter-school meets in the coming weeks.

‘BUDDIES’ COMMUNITY LESSON

On Thursday 21 February, Community Home Groups joined together for the first with their buddy classes. The format is designed to give students of different ages in the same community a chance to make connections and work together in enjoyable activities. Year 6s were paired with the Year 10 Home Group in their community, while the 7/8 Home Groups were each paired with an 11/12 Home Group. These connections will be encouraged throughout the year in a programme that enables the groups to share experiences and have fun!

YEAR 6 – ACTIVITIES

Mapping Excursion

On Friday 15 February, Year 6s went to the city to tour monuments, gardens and sights of the city.

ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ used maps and were given questions with clues to create a detailed description of interesting places along the way, such as Colonel Monument, Adelaide Zoo, Adelaide Oval, the War Memorial, SA Museum and the Botanical Gardens, which was an overall trip of 7.5km. Back in the classroom, students followed up on what they had learnt from their excursion to create their own maps of the journey using Google Tour Builder. This is part of their Individual & Societies MYP Fieldwork focussing on Geography.

Year 6 German classes celebrated the beginning of their Middle School journey with a traditional German Schult¨¹te. Children in Germany always receive a decorated ¡°school cone¡±, which contains stationery and sweets, on their first day of Year 1. Pictured are Year 6H with their creations.

Allayne Webster Visit

On Tuesday 12 February, children¡¯s author, Allayne Webster met with Year 6s in the Catford Library. Allayne presented a writing workshop, inspiring students by getting them to think of new strategies for writing creatively. Allayne did some fun activities with the students to stimulate their thinking. This all part of Language & Literature MYP where students are learning create narratives.

YEAR 10 – JELLY BABY CHALLENGE

ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ in Year 10 Geography enjoyed learning about the concept of population structure using different coloured Jelly babies. ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ were dealt out Jelly babies for their country. Blue – represented male adults, Orange – female adults, Red – male children, etc. Then students picked up various CHANCE cards which added to or reduced their population of certain coloured Jelly babies teaching them how different events including natural hazards and wars can influence the population. At the end of the game, students enjoyed reducing (eating) their countries population.

STAGE 1 & 2 BUSINESS – TREE CLIMB

During Week 3, Stage 1 & 2 Business students spent the morning at Tree Climb in the parklands on Greenhill Rd. ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ challenged themselves and supported each other to step out of their comfort zone in the obstacle courses. This gave students an opportunity to prepare for group work activities and to practice trying new things and embracing uncertainty. These collaborative and risk-taking skills are important in the business world and are a particular focus in the new Stage 1 Business Innovation curriculum, where this semester, students are working in teams on projects to improve different programs and spaces across the College.

After experiencing the climb, students had the opportunity to hear from management about the challenges involved in establishing a new innovative business in Adelaide, including contingency planning, and engaging all of the stakeholders. It was a great chance for students to experience innovation in action.

The proposed date for 2019 China tour is 10?October to 21?October.?This exciting opportunity would bring enormous benefit to the students¡¯ life-skills as well as improve their knowledge and understanding of ancient Chinese history and culture. The trip will also give them the opportunity to build their personal independence and social skills in preparation for a global future.

Celebrating final day of Lunar New Year at ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ

Tuesday 19 February marked the 15th day of the Lunar New Year?celebrations.?The New Year period officially comes to its climax with the Yuan Xiao (ÔªÏü½Ú¡ªyu¨¢n xi¨¡o ji¨¦), or Lantern Festival. Beginning over 2000 years ago, the festival has many meanings. During the Lantern Festival, ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ students in Chinese classes have learnt that children go out at night carrying paper lanterns?and solve riddles written on the lanterns. ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ also made paper lanterns in Chinese lessons, in ancient times, the lanterns were fairly simple, and only the Emperor and noblemen had large ornate lanterns. In modern times, lanterns have been embellished with many complex designs. For example, lanterns are now often made in the shape of animals. The lanterns can symbolize the people letting go of their past selves and beginning anew and are usually red to symbolize good luck.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR SPORTS REPORT

Week 3, saw the first full week of ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ sport for 2019. Our teams have started the year with some fantastic performances across a range of sports.

Our three tennis teams started very well, with our Primary and Middle teams coming away with victories against Concordia and Blackfriars. We have had a huge increase in player numbers across our tennis teams which is great to see. Our Senior Girls Volleyball team had a great come from behind victory against Marryatville with the third set going 30-28.

Both ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ Under 14 Basketball teams have started their seasons undefeated, with good wins against Trinity and St Joseph’s this week. The 8/9 Cricket team had their first game of the season after week 1 was washed out. Well done to Daksh Gupta for his 27 runs.

We’ve had some great results from our Netball teams. Our Intermediates continued their impressive season with a convincing win over Golden Grove. ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵÏÂÔØ¡¯s Sub Primary 3 and Junior 1 team picked up their first win of the season! A great reward for their hard work.

Year 8/9 Cricket – Update

In Week 3, Year 8/9 Knockout Cricket team travelled to Henley High School to play a 25 over match. Henley won the toss and sent us into bat. The boys made a strong start Liam Kearns and Ryan Penna mixing in some classy attacking shots, with resolute defence. Unfortunately, carnage followed with us losing four wickets in four balls in the same over reducing our batting line-up in half.

Oliver Shimmin and Bailey Winder put together a good partnership at the end to get us to a total of 66. The boys toiled hard with the ball and made the Henley players work for every run. Nicholas Graves was especially impressive bowling three maidens in a row. The bowlers kept it tight and it took them until the 16^th over for them to pass our score. The team played with great spirit against such a tough opponent and should be commended for their effort.

Ash Wednesday Service

Join with other members of the College community to mark the commencement of Lent,?a time when many Christians around the world prepare for Easter with a season of reflection and repentance.?Rev Mark Hawkes will lead the service, which will include Communion and the opportunity to receive the sign of the cross in ash for those who value that tradition.?The service will be held at St Mark’s Anglican Church, cnr. The Golden Way and Wynn Vale Drive, Wynn Vale, on Wednesday 6 March from 7:30am – 8:00am. (Carpark entry is off Wynn Vale Drive). There is no need to advise of your attendance in advance. Childhood Cancer – Tea Tree Gully Uniting Church

Tea Tree Gully Uniting Church is helping families by hosting a presentation for Childhood Cancer. Marriage Course

The Marriage Course is a wonderful opportunity to spend time with your spouse and build a strong and healthy marriage that lasts a lifetime. A strong, loving and lifelong relationship doesn¡¯t happen by chance. It takes effort and dedication to keep fun and romance alive. We can all learn how to make even the happiest marriage better.

The next Marriage Course will run on Thursday evenings in May ¨C June 2019 (May 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th, June 6th, and 13th). We meet at 6:30pm for a 6:45pm start and end before 9:00pm. Each evening a special supper will be served so you¡¯ll only need a light dinner before arriving.
