COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

Mr James Tamblyn

It鈥檚 been a pleasure over the past week to attend a couple of fantastic netball grand finals for our 榴莲视频下载 teams. Our Primary 2 team played last Saturday afternoon and had an excellent match against Para Hills. Despite giving our best all game, Para Hills proved a little too strong and won by 8 goals. On Tuesday 7 September evening, our Sub Junior 1 team played their Grand Final against Tea Tree Gully. This was an amazing match, with 榴莲视频下载 trailing by 4 goals at 3/4 time before completely dominating the final quarter, scoring 9-1 and winning the game by 4. Well done to all players involved in both matches for the exceptional way that you represented yourselves and the College.

R U OK? Day took place across Australia on Thursday 9 September. It’s a day when we encourage people to check-in with each other and provides a reminder that every day is a good day to ask friends, family and colleagues if everything is OK. R U OK? has developed free resources to help you encourage everyone to think about who in their world might need to be asked how they are really going. More information can be found at the .听

Our Middle School celebrated Service Day today, following on from other experiential learning days – Diversity Day and Imagination Day – held earlier in the year. Service Day provided an opportunity for all Middle School students to plan and implement a project designed to have a tangible impact on the lives of a person, or a group of people, within our local community. There were amazing scenes today as our students initiated some incredibly thoughtful and creative ideas to support our community. My thanks to Mrs Brooks and her Middle School team for driving this wonderful day of learning for our students.听

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL / HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOL

Mr Andrew Whiteman

鈥業t鈥檚 ok to not know where you are going.. Just keep going.鈥 The theme of this week鈥檚 assembly was about finding your own path. All of our students are on a different journey and many know where they want to end up, but an equal number are unsure of their future. 榴莲视频下载 heard about not being afraid to take a chance and try something new. Life is not easy for anyone and, for our students, it鈥檚 all about trying your best to open up to the choices you have in future life.听

Congratulations to all the students and staff that were involved in the College Musical last week. The production 鈥楬igh School Musical鈥 was, yet again, another outstanding performance by students from Year 7 through to Year 12. A lot of time and energy was committed to this event and the performers truly shone. After COVID restrictions delayed the performance, our staff and students showed tremendous resilience to stay focussed, continue to practice and then to perform to such a high standard was very pleasing.听

We pray for the people of Afghanistan after the recent tragic events in this country. We are deeply saddened by what is occurring and watch on as another sad chapter is written for this war-ravaged country. We pray for those in Government to make decisions based on compassion and empathy for everyone involved. Our upcoming Middle School Service Day will include a coordinated effort to support the refugees that have landed recently in Adelaide. With confronting events occurring all around the world, we are continually reminded that we are lucky to live in such a wonderful and safe country.听

HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL

听Mrs Lauren Brooks

What a brilliant day of exploratory learning for our Middle School students today.听

Service Day was an opportunity for students to engage in a day of uninterrupted, deep, discovery-based learning, with a strong focus on developing skills and capabilities. This day also came with a very strong purpose, to create a product or initiative that serves a community by the end of this learning experience.听

The centrality of Service Day encompassed a key inquiry-based learning component where students engaged in rich, authentic and transferable learning. 榴莲视频下载 further developed their skills and capabilities such as critical thinking, creativity and innovation, communication, collaboration, research, organisation and reflective IB ATL skills.听

We are always so proud of how 榴莲视频下载 students engage in these amazing learning initiatives. Today our students worked hard, they committed to learning in a new style and adapted quickly to the change and challenges that come with new learning environments.听

Most importantly, our students completed their service-learning outcomes with pride. There was such a sense of meaning and purpose within the learning environment today, and we are so looking forward to contributing positively to our local community with the various elements created today.听

HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

Mr听Randall Pearce

Year 5 Exhibition – Wednesday 22 September听

Year 5 leaves its mark on 榴莲视频下载 students. Firstly, it is the last year of Primary, and it represents the leap towards the Middle Years Program (MYP). It marks a before and an after in the Primary stage as students face the Primary Years Program (PYP) Exhibition, the first major public exhibition of their long and extensive inquiry learning process.听

PYP Exhibition is not another short-term project, a presentation on a topic, or just a usual event. It is the last step of hundreds of little steps leading them to a culminating milestone event, marking the end of their time as a PYP student. It is an extensive research project that builds the foundational skills they will need as they enter the MYP and beyond.听听

Year 5 students worked on the exhibition throughout the term. The process involves hours of discussions, debates, questions, and reflection on a transdisciplinary theme. It is an opportunity for students to implement several weeks of research, analysis, and critical thinking to solve real-life problems through their innovative projects.听

At 榴莲视频下载, our focus is on the process, rather than the product; the expedition, rather than the final day of the Exhibition. The visible part of the PYP Exhibition is the display of all the projects where students present their research, their process of inquiry, and their creative projects to the 榴莲视频下载 Community. It is the part that we get to see, but let鈥檚 not forget that there is a lot of effort behind it, weeks of work, research, analysis, and preparation.听

PYP Exhibition is a powerful demonstration of student agency, as well as the agency of the community that has nurtured them through their years in the PYP. The learning community participates in the exhibition, supporting and celebrating the development of internationally-minded students who make a positive difference in their lives and the lives of others. All exhibitions are student-initiated, designed and collaborative.

When students see concrete actions that they can choose to take to make a difference, they see themselves as competent, capable and active agents of change (Oxfam 2015).

Action is a means for students to show that they have linked their learning to real-life issues and opportunities.听

They understand and recognise the interconnectedness and interdependence of issues, and consider these from multiple perspectives (Oxfam 2015, UNESCO 2015).

Initiated by students, PYP action is authentic, meaningful, mindful, responsible and responsive. Action could be:

  • a change in attitude
  • a consideration or plan for action in the future
  • a demonstration of responsibility, or of respect for self, others and the environment
  • a commitment to leading or participating in a youth advocacy group
  • an engagement in school decision-making or an expression of support in community, local and global decision-making.

As a culminating project, the Exhibition has required students to draw on their learning throughout the PYP. As our Year 5 students move forward to Year 6 and the Middle Years Program, they do so with the confidence that they have gained many skills, the ability to inquire and research, to work collaboratively and to choose and develop appropriate action.

I look forward to sharing this wonderful learning experience with our community on Wednesday, 22 September 2021.听

STATE FINAL SCIENCE INVESTIGATION AWARDS

6 September 2021

What started with over 1000 students during the school and local rounds of the Science Investigator Awards, came down to some very tough competition of around 130 entries in the State Final of the Science Investigation Awards on Monday 6 September at the Royal Adelaide Showground.听

Our 23 finalists from Year 6 – 9 represented 榴莲视频下载 very well, and the judges were highly impressed with the calibre of posters and projects presented.听

We ended up coming away in first place for Year 7 & 8, and third place in the Senior category.

Congratulations to Eugene who won Year 7 category with his project on Microbial Fuel Cells; and Callum who won Year 8 category with his project and robot on which is the best strategy for winning Rock, Paper, Scissors game.

ONE+ BOOK CUP AWARD

27 August 2021

2nd Place: Aditi and Rebecca – ‘The Witches’

4th Place: Yshi and Ojaswi – ‘Peter Pan’

Year 8 students participated again in the annual One+ Book Cup competition. This competition has been running in different formats between Golden Grove High School, Gleeson College and 榴莲视频下载 for over 20 years!

In 2021, students in Year 8 were asked to creatively transform their own chosen text into a multimodal presentation, fitting with this year’s Book Week theme ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds.’ We had some amazing multi-modals completed across all of our Year 8 classes, but only four could be chosen to represent 榴莲视频下载 at the Book Cup awards ceremony.

The following students represented 榴莲视频下载 with their presentations: Ojaswi, Aditi, Lorcyn, Anabella, Rebecca, Yana, Aymee, Yshi and Amity.

While Gleeson took out the top prize for the second year running, we are very excited to announce that 榴莲视频下载 received both 2nd and 4th prizes, presented by our local MPs.

Congratulations to the following students:

2nd Place: Aditi and Rebecca – ‘The Witches’

4th Place: Yshi and Ojaswi – ‘Peter Pan’

LEARNING HIGHLIGHTS

BUSINESS INNOVATION EXCURSION – LUMINATION

Year 11

A core component of the learning undertaken in our 榴莲视频下载 Senior School Entrepreneurship subjects involves looking at opportunities provided by digital and emerging technologies to develop new products and services, as well as to find new ways of doing things.

To further develop students鈥 understanding of new technologies, Year 11 Business Innovation students recently spent the day at Lumination in Kent Town. Whilst at Lumination, students learnt about the differences between virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality technologies. 榴莲视频下载 then experimented with a range of short creative projects using virtual and augmented reality technologies. These technologies are useful for students to consider in prototyping product solutions and in a variety of marketing applications. 榴莲视频下载 are now looking at ways to incorporate these and other technologies into their current business solutions.

Staff members who attended this excursion are also looking at ways that these technologies can be incorporated in new and innovative ways across other learning areas within the College.

WORLD OF MATHS

Year 7

On Wednesday 8th August, Year 7 students were privileged to take part in the ‘World of Maths’ morning. 鈥榃orld of Maths鈥 is a unique travelling Maths show which meets the Australian Curriculum strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability.听

榴莲视频下载 took part in hands-on Maths problem-solving. By working in small collaborative groups, students built problem-solving and reasoning skills, while applying Mathematics to the physical world, which are integral skills required in Mathematics.

Year 7s found the experience fun and engaging, and most importantly, the morning allowed students to build a positive attitude towards Mathematics.

GPS WORKSHOP

Year 10 PE

On 6th September, Year 10 SHAPE Physical Education students had the opportunity to be involved in the University of South Australia (UniSA) Connect Program. The day began with an introduction to the GPS technology that is used widely in sports science within professional sport. 榴莲视频下载 then completed a range of activities to collect data to be analysed and evaluated. The afternoon session involved an in-depth discussion of how to analyse the data and apply the sports science concepts. We also discussed the career pathways within the field of sports science and how the industry has grown significantly over the past ten decades.听

We would like to thank Katie, Liem and Alex for providing this experience to our students.

GEOGRAPHY URBAN FIELD TRIP

Year 11

A group of intrepid Year 11 Geography students enjoyed an Urban Field trip which included visits to Christie Walk Ecovillage, Davoren Park, Rosewood Estate, and The Bridges in Mawson Lakes.

At Christie Walk, students were introduced to highly sustainable forms of urban development. Straw bale houses, Adelaide’s first rooftop garden, thermal flues, community laundry and other features made Christie Walk highly liveable. 榴莲视频下载 enjoyed the recess time at the Central Market. 榴莲视频下载 then collected data in Davoren Park on the livability of the suburb which they will use to compare with their home suburb in a Summative Assessment task. The effectiveness of urban renewal strategies was evaluated at Rosewood Estate. Elizabeth City Centre was a great place for lunch. Followed by an analysis of the livability of Mawson Lakes suburb. Our students were exemplary during the field trip.

MOTOR MUSEUM EXCURSION

Junior School – Year 3

On Thursday 9th September, Year 3 students ventured off-site to Birdwood and visited the Motor Museum. 榴莲视频下载 were amazed and excited by the range of vehicles on display. From motorbikes and classic cars to modern and stylish Lamborghinis, and everything in between. Our exploration of how motor vehicles have evolved and changed, support our unit of inquiry into 鈥楬ow the World Works鈥 with the central idea of 鈥楬umans are driven to imagine鈥. 榴莲视频下载 learnt about local Hawkers who used to travel for months to sell merchandise door-to-door to local townspeople. Everyone enjoyed exploring the old artefacts and guessing their function.听

鈥淚 like the scavenger hunt around the museum.鈥 Josiah, Year 3.

鈥淚 enjoyed looking for the old T Model Ford cars. The gold one was one of the hardest to find.鈥 Nivedh, Year 3.

鈥淲e had to find lots of things on the 鈥楯unk Car鈥 like a plastic fork, which was hard to find.鈥 Charli, Year 3.

High School Musical

1-3 September 2021

In Week 7 we were finally able to bring to the stage 榴莲视频下载’s fabulous performance of High School Musical. After enduring a postponement of the show earlier in the term, a passionate team of staff and 55 brilliant students from Year 8-12 transported the audience to a place of laughter, dancing and joy for three unforgettable performances. As the Director, it was a magical experience to see the vision for this show come to life, and it will be something that all involved will never forget. Many thanks go to everyone that contributed to High School Musical, but my sincere gratitude goes to Mrs Jude Johnson, Mr Gerald Pederick, Miss Alana Galapa, Mrs Jan Robertson, Miss Tiana Riemelmoser and Mrs Kai Benyk for their commitment, passion and support. Last but not least, the students of 榴莲视频下载 certainly ‘let their light shine’ as they shared their talent with the community and collaborated with maturity, commitment and confidence to deliver outstanding performances.听

R U OK? Day – 9 September 2021

R U OK? Day is our national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is the day to ask, 鈥楢re you OK?鈥

Yesterday, 9 September, we were encouraged to start conversations, to connect with others, to lend an ear and to actively provide support to those who need it. A conversation could change a life. Asking 鈥楢re you OK?鈥, especially during these times is so important, not just today but every day.
